Udupi, Aug 26: The newly renovated St Joseph Church, Belman, was blessed and inaugurated by Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, bishop of Udupi on Sunday, August 26.
He celebrated the Eucharistic Mass with the parishioners and other priests. In his homily, the bishop said, “The dream of Belman parishioners has today come true. This church is the result of much efforts and perseverance of people. This is not just a building, but the feelings and desire of all the parishioners. This is a road to heaven. In Indian tradition, ‘Devalaya’ has a beautiful meaning. It means the dwelling place of God. This place is a holy place which builds connection between the people and almighty. Here people offer their prayers and surrender before Him. We need to live the sacrament which we celebrate here. The society should recognize us as true followers of Christ. The renovation of the church is completed now, but building of the community is a big task.”
“Two places are holy for us. One is the church and other one is the cemetery. A church is a place of prayer. People offer their prayers and intentions here. The church environment should make us to pray wholeheartedly. Let this place remain holy forever,” said the bishop in his concluding remark.
The bishop also conducted the rituals of blessing of the newly renovated church and belfry tower. Donor of the belfry tower Magdaline D’Mello also took part in the inauguration. Donors and patrons who contributed for the renovation work of the church were felicitated by bishop with candles.
Fr Edwin D’Souza, parish priest, Fr Prakash Menezes, assistant parish priest, Fr Reginald Pinto, Fr Steevan, Fr Arun D’Souza, Alwyn Ageira, vice-president of parish pastoral committee and a large number of parishioners took part in the celebrations.
