Mangaluru, Aug 27: Chappara Muhoorta programme ahead of preparation of new bishop's Episcopal ordination was held on August 27 at Rosario Cathedral grounds.

Member of Parliament Nalin Kumar Kateel performed the Chappara Muhoorta along with other guests.

Nalin Kumar Kateel addressing the gathering said, “It is because of God's providence I am here. The Episcopal ordination is a national event.”

Nalin spoke about the role of Christians in social harmony and appreciated the role of bishop of Mangaluru in building a healthy society.

He said that when the central government announced Swachh Bharath programme, it is the bishop of Mangaluru who first took initiative. When there were attempts to disrupt peace in Mangaluru in September 2008, it was the bishop who took imitative to settle the matter and called the meeting to sort out all the differences.

Nalin also extended the support of central government as well all local MLAs of his party for the programme and to the new bishop.

Speaking on the occasion J R Lobo, former MLA stated, “Mangaluru is known for peace and harmony and all of us can work together to build harmonious society,”

Ivan D’souza, MLC in his address recalled his memories and said, “Christians of Mangaluru diocese always live with harmony. I request the MP to extend his full support for the programme,”

In his presidential address bishop Dr Aloysius Paul D’souza appreciated the goodwill of MP Nalin Kumar. “Usually the close relatives are invited for Chappara Muhoorta and that is why we have our close ones on this occasion with us,” he said.

Secretary of Mangaluru diocese pastoral parishad and co-coordinator MP Noronha said, “Today world is considered as a global village. In this global village Christians are in majority. But in India Christians are minority. Episcopal ordination programme is being watched by people worldwide. BJP is ruling at the Centre and its MP Nalin Kumar has joined us to extend his and central government's whole hearted support for the Episcopal ordination programme and to the new bishop. This is a historical event of our country to promote harmony and goodwill.”

He appreciated Nalin Kumar for gracing the occasion by cancelling his other programmes though it was fixed at the last moment.

Lathif, corporator, Fr J B Crasta the chief co-ordinator, Fr Onil D’souza the convenor logistic committee, Fr Vincent Monteiro, Fr Richard D’Souza, Fr Vijay Victor Lobo, PRO of diocese of Mangaluru , Luvi Pinto, Marcel Monteiro and Sushil Noronha were present among others.

Fr Roopesh Madtha compered the event.

We wholeheartedly endorse most of the comment expressed in this article that proudly proclaim the positive role the Christians of Mangalore play in their daily life towards peace and harmony of the entire City. We have always cherished high respects towards so many distinguished Leaders of Mangalore who are either Hindus or Moslems and they in turn have displayed their best of admiration towards all the Christians of Mangalore.

Our Bishops, our Priests and Nuns, our Doctors, Nurses and Engineers, and most importantly many of Civic leaders such as Mr. J. R. Lobo, Ivan D'Souza, Oscar Fernandes, Eric Ozario, Meena Rebimbos, Louie Pinto, and many many others whose names will comprise a long list, have given and will continue to give the very best to our Community and Society regardless of our faith. Tens of thousands of students go thru the best of Catholic Education is a strong testimony of all that we dedicate towards the progress and growth of Manglore. Obediently we visit Mangalore at least once a year, and we return home with a sense of pride and joy to witness so much of positive goodwill and contribution to our beloved community.

Now that Mangalore is getting prepared to organize the consecration of our new Bishop, it is amazing to witness so much of public support and enthusiasm from the general public. All these landmarks of opportunities will continue to elevate the Christians to a higher pedestal. May God bless us all, and may Mangalore continue to display the spirit of patriotism and solidarity in all our day to day commitments to Mangalore, our beloved home town.

Although one can experience the amity between Hindus/Christians in Coastal region, one has to take statements of Kateel with a pinch of salt, since most of us on this forum know the facts.

    I know for real.
The love you get from Christian Community is to be felt to be believed.
Almost all my neighbours were Christians. The joy when we happen to meet
on rare occasions cannot be explained. Nostalgic we get.
Kashen Asai Puthaa....from the elders is enough to get the eyes moist.
Think no mixing, mingling ...of late, new trends have contributed to the kind of atmosphere we live in today.

Myna, Mysuru , is right of her own experience. Even I am also with Myna because some of the fanatic bakts always vomit venom. Did you attend any VHP functions and how they talk ill about Christians. The polarization in coastal Karnataka is mainly because of VHP and their leader Praveen Togadia. What happened to him is a history as his deeds are haunting him.

D.Shetty, you are also right and you might be mixing a lot of Christians in Bahrain. Small mischief may take place but no leaders are there to condemn but some are supporting them. This is really sad.

Shankar please note poor people need life same like you to live comfortable ways. If a Christians can provide them best life of thier choice why not they can choose to be a Christian with thier own choice. Do you know accepting christ is not a offence but it is a honour. To be a Christian on this earth is not a rose garden but it is a accepting humiliation and hardship like christ on the cross and serve every brothers and sister the ways christ has served. Christianity is a charitable work and servino others rather owns elf. You see most of the Christians are serving generously without anything expect in return. You guys label conversion just to political and jealous ways wherr hard to help your thinking. Please be generous and kind towards poor and do your best to help flow human without thinking too much religion lines.

Good to see all together in Mangaluru, which is known for communal harmony. The problem with us is we fight elections like war and make divisions afar, which is only resulting in destruction. Let us learn to contest elections by living an example, social service and connected to people without bringing religion, cast, creed, majority or minority. Voting to someone is an individual decision. Its a choice and let us respect that and make our Mangaluru a model town for the entire country.

All religions and their importance is vastly overrated. If any one reads history in detail about the history of religions it is evident that religions and religious leaders used fear factor to control the society. It did bring order then but now in this era people who have access to information know religions are like government. They control ppl. And ya god has nothing to do with religions

Instead of speaking a lot of negativity, we should learn to appreciate good in others; and our criticism should be constructive.!
The one who is good in analyzing our own mistakes and correcting them will surely improve and move ahead in everything.

Nalin ji, it’s not only the Christians who are known for social harmony. Even Hindus, Muslims, and people who follow the tenets of different religions live in peace and create a peaceful environment for others. It’s only the radical elements in the society who disrupt peace for their own vested interests.
