Kundapur, Aug 28: Unknown thieves entered two temples late night on Sunday August 26, broke open locks of the front doors, and escaped with silver valuables and donation boxes. It is felt that local thieves might have been involved with the thefts as both the temples are not big and not well known.
Kerekatte Virupaksha temple and Sri Shantheshwara temple within Hosangadi village were targeted by the thieves. Empty donation box of Lord Virupaksha temple was found to have been tossed away by the roadside. However, the thieves have not left behind anything relating to Shantheshwara temple.
On account of Shravan month as per Hindu system, 'Sone Arati' was performed in both the temples. The priests had gone home after keeping away the silver items used to decorate the idols and also the donation boxes. The thieves, who entered these temples later, took away the valuables. The amount of cash in donation boxes could not be estimated.
Deputy superintendent of police, Dinesh Kumar BP, local police circle inspector, Manjappa D R, Amasebail station house officer, Shekhar, finger print experts and sniffer dogs were pressed into service.
