Mangaluru, Aug 31: The case in which a woman had died in Wenlock Hospital here after giving birth to a male child on Wednesday night, and the fight that followed over taking custody of her mortal remains ended on a happy note on Thursday with the intervention of the police. There was dispute between the parents of the lady and her in-laws over who should take away her body and perform her funeral.
Deepika Acharya (27), wife of Prakash Acharya from Kabettu, Karkala, had died at the hospital. Deepika from Gantalkatte, Moodbidri, had married Prakash during November, 2017. Baby shower had been arranged for Deepika, whose pregnancy was of seven and half months, at the residence of her in-laws on August 23. She then went to her parental home for delivery. As she developed complications, she was admitted into a private hospital at Moodbidri on August 25 by her parents. From there, she was shifted to Lady Goschen Hospital here the same day.
As her health condition turned critical, the doctors decided to perform caesarean section on her. They took out baby boy during the procedure, and shifted Deepika to Wenlock Hospital as she needed advanced care. At 10.55 pm on Wednesday, she breathed her last.
Thereafter, a tug-of-war ensued on Thursday between her parents and in-laws, and the in-laws reportedly demanded the gold ornaments she wore if they were to perform her funeral. The dispute went on for long.
Pandeshwar police, who got to know about it, arrived at the hospital, dispersed people from both the sides who had assembled in large numbers, took the main persons to the police station and mediated with them.
Pandeshwar police station inspector, Sainath, said that the issue has been harmoniously sorted out and no case was registered.
At round 7 pm on Thursday, the body was handed over to the family of Deepika's in-laws after inquest. The baby boy delivered by Deepika continues to be in the intensive care unit of pediatric ward of Wenlock Hospital.
The family members of Deepika said that Prakash Acharya, father of the child, has said that he would take the child with him.
