New Delhi, Aug 31: Putting the rumours on continuous bank holidays in September first week to rest, the finance ministry has issued a statement that banks will remain open and banking activity will continue unimpeded in the first week of September.

The clarification was issued after rumours on continuous bank holidays spread panic among public. People were worried that banks will remain closed the entire week due to festivities and strike.

"The banks will observe holidays on Sunday, September 2 and on second Saturday on September 8," the ministry clarified in the statement.

The Janmashtami holiday on September 3 is not a pan-India holiday. Hence, the holidays are declared only in certain states under the negotiable instruments act, the statement said.

The ministry has assured that online transactions and ATMs will remain functional and banks have been directed to ensure sufficient cash is fed in ATMs.
