Udupi, Sep 2: “I had purchased tablets from Udupi for my mother-in-law Tasleema who lives in Kuwait and I had given it to Shankar Poojary. Since he had left the medicine bills and doctor’s prescription letter that he was arrested,” said Mubharak, son-in-law of Tasleema here on Saturday, September 1.

Addressing a press meet here at press club Mubharak said, “Tasleema Fathima is my mother-in-law (Mubarak wife's mother). Shankar was known to my mother-in-law. Tasleema is working as house- keeping staff from many years in Kuwait. She is suffering from severe back pain and has undergone treatment. Shankar is working in a food production company in Kuwait.

“Tasleema requested me to send medicines with Shankar. He came to his hometown on ten days leave. I purchased medicines from a private medical shop. I had given all required doctor's prescription, medicines bill copy and other details along with medicines. But Shankar left all details except the medicine. That is why he was caught at Kuwait Airport and we got this news 20 days after he was arrested.

“Jyothi, wife of Shankar had lodged a complaint at Kundapur police station. I approached the police and have informed them the entire episode. Gopal, who is a neighbour of Shankar has approached Indian embassy. But we have not received any positive response. Even Kafeel (owner) is silent over the incident. I met Jyothi and spoke personally. I found medical bills’ copy at her house.

“Later we approached MP Shobha Karandlaje, Nalin Kumar Kateel and Minister Sushma Swaraj. I have made all efforts to release Shankar from police custody. But Jyothi has given false statement to the media over this case. I am at fault since I had given additional medicine which was not mentioned in the prescription letter. Even I do not know about drugs which are banned in Kuwait.

“Besides this, Rakshana Vedike president Ansar Ahmed called me and assured that he will help to release Shankar and in return he demanded Rs 1.5 lac. I have phone conversation recording of the same. He is spreading wrong messages against me on social media without knowing the fact. But we are still keeping quiet. I will lodge a complaint against Ansar soon,” he added.

He further said, “Shankar is not a convict in this case. We will continue our efforts in releasing Shankar. I am co-operating with police in all possible ways. Tasleema came to her hometown on January 2018 on four months leave for Bakrid. But she did not stay here for long time. Meanwhile, she had back pain and got admitted in a local private hospital for treatment. She left to Kuwait on April 30 and had carried medicine only for 10 days. I have all the details and evidence which are required.”

He urged the Indian Embassy to release him after verifying those details. He has also urged The Kafeel (owner of Shankar) to intervene in the case.

It may be recalled that Shankar Poojary, who was employed in Kuwait and was returning to work after visiting home, was caught by the authorities at the airport in Kuwait with a parcel of tablets containing banned substance three months back. This parcel was being carried by him at the instance of a woman who is also working in Kuwait.

Even now it’s not too late. Mubarak can send the treating doctor’s prescription and a legalized medical certificate to Kuwait. And in Kuwait his mother-in-law can obtain a medical report from the local hospital to indicate that the medicines were genuinely meant for her treatment. This can pave way for Shankar's release.

Here Mubarak is giving chains of wrong statements? How can he find copies of medicine bills in Shankers house?Did he deposit it there ?Second why copies of Bills? They should be in origin or not?Probably he made copies of old bills?difficult to understand. When one handover medicines, naturally everything that belong to medicines are handedover.Shanker cannt demand or may not be knwing what and why.If he had not taken , Tasleem and her relatives would blame Shanker.I had that problem once for not taking medicines of others. Now more press meet and no solutions.Fellow is in jail. Now Mubarak should be active to show his innocence or mistake to release a innocent Shanker.

    You don't say:
"Shankar Poojary forgot to take bills and prescription with drugs"

    You admit:
You forgot to give bills and prescription with drugs.
    It is your responsibility.
You don't know a NRI's problems. He or they come for a few days on leave after 2/3 years of hard work and they have lot of things to do and specially when the day for their departure nears; they are out of mind. You can not imagine their feelings. And people like you assigning bitty - chakry for nothing.....? And putting innocent people in trouble.
    Shame on you......

    This Mubharak is a liar.
Tasleema said she has nothing to do with the parcel. Did Mubharak send the parcel to her without she aware of it? Unbelievable.

These people just wanted to get Shankar Poojary into jail and see the fun.. Sadists!!

If "Tasleema is working as house-keeping staff from many years in Kuwait", why is the prescription not from Kuwait? From elsewhere I gather that the prescription used by Mubarak to buy a whopping 210 (two hundred and ten) was generated in India.

Kuwait imposes a limit of 20 tablets per prescription (for permitted medicines).

If Tasleema is indeed suffering from "severe back pain", how come she is not getting treatment at the expense of her employer in Kuwait? Even if the employer does not want to pay for the pain-killers (extremely cheap pain-killers are available all over the Gulf), surely, the employer would have assisted her to be seen by a doctor in Kuwait and she would have received her prescription?

What is more puzzling is the fact that these pain-killers are Tamadol-based, a most frequently used narcotic in the Gulf countries. Why did the folks choose these when most common pain-killers in India are non-Tamadol?

I would suggest hence forth, all Airline tickets all over the world should give warnings to passengers by printing special clauses in the air ticket itself to avoid these situation.

All indian airport staff must also caution passengers while checking in, and suitable warnings must be displayed at air line counters, immigration counters and security checks as well.

Surely someone's misfortune can be averted this way.

    Jai Hind!!!

Mr. Shankar Poojary, a mistake has been made and you have to rectify it by yourself or through some outside help. I am sure you will be out of jail if you get the right help. This should be a lesson for others.

For small small issue these Gulf officials should not do this is a big issue. Why they send him to jail.?. Instead of this they must cancel his Passport and send him in very next flight. Matter over. And they must Ban him for the next 10 or 15 years. ( keep records of his photo, fingerprint and eye test.)That's all. This is my opinion.

The issue is, So far Tasleema never approached the Kuwaiti authorities after Shankers arrest. She wants to play safe and wash her hands off the incident. Had she come front and explained with all the relevant docs & medical prescription . The authorities would have considered releasing Shankar.

Then why his mother in law Tasleema not claiming the parcel in front of Kuwait Authorities? Also this man is claiming he has included certain medicine which is not there in Doctors prescription. It could be those medicines for which Shankar was jailed? Looks like this man is not speaking full truth

This is the million dollar question that no one is asking. Apparently Tasleem had travelled to Kuwait before with the medicine to last 10 days. Why cant she come front and take the onus ? Is she and her bretheren biding time to blame Modi for a failed foreign policy.

Mubarak also said that he has given additional tablets over and above mentioned in the prescription. So, Mubarak is at fault. "I don't know the law in Kuwait" is not an excuse. Poor Shankar trusted Mubarak and took the medicines. Moral of the story: Never ever take any parcel from anyone even if he/she is your good friend or family. Hope Shankar gets released soon.
