Kasargod, Sep 4: In an operation conducted at Kerala State Road Transport Corporation bus stand here on Monday September 3, two persons were arrested and 1.2 kg gold worth about Rs 35 lac was confiscated from their possession.
The arrested men have been identified as Abdul Shahid (28) from Nellikunje and Shamir (30) from Vidyanagar Chala here.
Abdul Shahid had arrived at Mangaluru airport from the Gulf along with the said consignment of gold. He somehow succeeded in escaping unscathed from the customs officials’ scrutiny at the airport. He arrived at the town and was handing over gold to Shamir, when both were arrested.
It is suspected that gold might have been handed over by the gold traffickers in Dubai to Shahid for being transported to Kerala. The officials believe that he was just a carrier for bringing gold into the country.
Gold had been given a coat that looked like silver with the help of mercury. Gold was stored in the form of thin wires and wafer-thin sheets which were concealed in flask and speaker, it is learnt.
The customs officials here too have been investigating the matter.
