Bengaluru, Sep 13: If everything moves as planned now, the astronauts of India might soon begin to enjoy Idli and Sambar when travelling in space. They will also be able to have cold drinks.
But these things might actually happen in the year 2022!
Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has been preparing to undertake space voyage with human beings. Elaborate planning for meeting the food requirements of the astronauts is also being undertaken. The quality of the food which the astronauts carry should be such that it should not deteriorate in an environment devoid of gravitation. Mysuru-based Defence Food Research Laboratory has been engaged in preparing such food stuff.
Discussions on the issue were recently held with the ISRO authorities, it is gathered. Prof Semwal said that it is possible to prepare foods like Idli Sambar, mango juice, frozen fruit juice etc and provide the same in proper packages. Semwal provided this information at the symposium and exhibition of food technology on the subject of 'strengthening army through food technology' held in the city on Wednesday September 12.
He said that the food which should be supplied is not yet finalized, and that the current packets are not suitable for being carried to the space. As they have to be prepared in the model of tubes, he hoped that they would be ready by the year 2020.
About food for defence forces, he said that 142 kinds of food technology have been developed, which have been provided to 583 companies including MTR, Mayya's and Godrej. As the defence personnel have to discharge duties at places located in high altitude for days on end without water, food that could be consumed without being cooked have been developed, he explained.
