Sullia-Madikeri highway thrown open for light vehicles

Daijiworld Media Network - Sullia (SP)

Sullia, Sep 14: The Sullia - Madikeri stretch of Mangaluru - Mysuru highway, many portions of which had been completely washed away and heavily damaged, has now been thrown open for the use of two-wheelers and light motor vehicles.

Traffic on this stretch of the road had been blocked since a month. Road work is still in progress. However, for the convenience of the general public, vehicles with four wheels have been allowed to ply on this road now.

The road had been completely destroyed at Madikeri, Madenadu, Monnangeri and Jodupala on Sullia - Madikeri stretch on account of natural disaster. The work of restoring the road is going on a war footing. Concreting of the road is also being undertaken.

National highway sub-division's engineer at Mangaluru said that in about a month, this road would be opened for all kinds of traffic.

Good that NH authorities are responding quickly. Not an easy task to clear the large landslides. All the major ghat roads that connects DK/Udupi districts to eastern part of Karnataka should have strong retaining wall built (could be concrete) after clearing some slopes which also means, the roads will be wider with enough space for laying drainage pipes or open drainage. Similar work I think is being done on some of the Himalayan roads. For Shiradi ghat, with the amount of traffic, certainly, they need to re-engineer to make it a 4 lane (2 lane each per direction) with a few tunnels to reduce the curves and distance.
