Doha, Sep 24: Gulf Lights defeated Talib XII by seven wickets in the inaugural match of the Zaffran Café’ Cricket Tournament at the West Bay Cricket Complex.
Siddiq Fahad, business development manager of Zaffran Café inaugurated the tournament in presence Qatar Veterans’ cricket officials, all players and match officials.
The tournament is played with new rules, which includes the introduction of powerplay for first six overs in the veteran's cricket.
After winning the toss, Talib XII captain Maqsood elected to bat. In the hot and humid weather, Talib XII had started cautiously and but were rocked by Gulf Lights captain Mohammed with three quick wickets. Talib XII scored 30 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in the powerplay overs. Gulf Lights bowlers never allowed Talib XII batsman to score freely and took wickets at regular intervals. Talib XII finally was bowled out for 90 runs in the 18thover. Feroz of Talib XII top scored with 24 runs with 2 sixes. Firnas and Waqar were the only other batsmen who registered double digit scores.
For Gulf Lights, Mohammed, their captain and Ibrahim took 3 wickets each giving 13 and 18 runs respectively in the allotted 3 overs, Shariq and Mohan took 2 wickets each and Nadeem took 1 wicket.
In reply, Gulf Lights breezed past the target in the 10th over for the loss of 4 wickets. Adam, of Gulf Lights top scored with 25 runs in 11 balls with three sixes and one four. Baba contributed with score of 22 runs with three sixes, Sabir and Mohammed scored 12 runs each. Gulf Lights finally won the match in 9.4 overs losing 4 wickets.
For Talib XII, Ehsan took 2 wickets, Feroz and Abid took 1 wicket each.
For his all-round performance, Mohammed of Gulf Lights was adjudged man of the match.
