Udupi, Sep 27: After a blast occurred in the transformer of second unit of Udupi Power Corporation Ltd's (UPCL) power generation facility at Yellur near Padubidri in the district on Wednesday September 26 morning, the unit stopped functioning.
The incident reportedly happened on account of technical issues in the coal-based power generation unit. As a result, the second unit, which has a capacity of 600 mw, has been shut down. The first unit however, has been generating electricity.
Although the staff were working when the blast occurred, no injuries or loss of lives were reported. The company is said to have suffered huge loss on account of the blast. A proper estimate of the loss can be calculated only after top technical officials visit the site and assess the situation, it is learnt.
UPCL had not generated power between June and August because of good rainfall. In September, the units had begun generation.
