Bantwal, Sep 29: Police on Friday, September 28, took two persons into custody in connection with the demolition of Mother Mary grotto and installation of some idols and buntings at that place.
The incident had taken place at Kulal near Kolnadu in Bantwal taluk on the night of Thursday, September 27. The grotto belongs to Vijayadka Church.
Superintendent of police Ravikanthe Gowda, who visited the place, said that stern action will be taken against the culprits. Bantwal circle inspector T D Nagaraj also visited the place with other police personnel.
Bantwal tahasildar Purander said that the place is in government land and hence government has taken the possession of land and no activities will be allowed there till decision is taken.
David D’Souza and Charlie Veigas have lodged a police complaint regarding the case.
The grotto was constructed in 1970 as per the decision of Vijayadka parish council. After that people were seen visiting the place for prayers for all these years.
A person has also filed complaint saying that the grotto was built on a disputed land. Church management said they had taken permission to build the grotto from the owner who owned the kumki land.
Political leaders including MLC Ivan D’Souza have condemned the demolition of grotto.
Police, who acted swiftly as soon as they came to know about the incident, controlled the situation and maintained law and order.
