Kasargod, Oct 1: The prelims of All India Konkani Poetry Recital Competition for youth and children began with the Kerala state-level preliminary round which was held at Kayyar on Sunday, September 30.
Melvyn Rodrigues, trustee of Kavita Trust and Akademi award winner Konkani poet, inaugurated the prelims by lightening the lamp. Fr Victor D Souza, parish priest, Kayyar, presided over the inaugural programme. John D’Souza, vice-president, parish council, Kayyar, Raju Stephen, sub- editor, Mahima Magazine and Roshan, secretary, parish council, Kayyar were present in dais.
In his inaugural speech Melvyn Rodrigues said "I am very happy to see a large number of students and youths who have come to participate in this competition. It shows the poetry recital has became a new trend in this region. Last year, for the first time, the participants from Kerala got the eligibility to participate in national-level and they clinched victory. I congratulate all who participated in national- level competition last year and wishing all the best to all contestants who have gathered here for this prelim,”
Wishing the contestants John D Souza said "Recital of poem is not an easy job. The person who recites the poem should know the theme and soul of the poem. For competitions, selection of poem and modulation are very important things. Pronunciation is also very crucial."
In his presidential speech Fr Victor said "I am thankful to Kavita Trust and Mahima for organising such a event at Kayyar. Competition of poetry recital is a unique and rare for our region. It will help our children and students to learn many things on Konkani poems and poets. Reading and reciting the poems is a special experience and it increases our knowledge. I congratulate all the participants for their participation.”
Roshan Kayyar, welcomed the dignitaries and participants. George D’Souza rendered vote of thanks. Stany Bela compered the event.

Loy Kiran D’Souza, Kayyar was selected for the finals of Rohan and Lavita Monteiro, All India Konkani poetry reciting competition in the youth category.
The prelims of this competition are being held at 17 places and those who qualify in the prelims will get the chance to participate in the finals at Kavita Fest 2019 to be held on January 13, 2019 in Mangaluru.
Every participant for the prelims get certificate of participation. Travel and accommodation will be provided for the finalists by Kavita Trust apart from cash prizes and memento.
