Mangalore, Oct 2: Gandhi Jayanthi, the birthday of father of nation, was observed by the district administration, district public education department, department of information and broadcast and district sevadal unit on Monday, October 2. District in-charge minister UT Khader, deputy commissioner, Sasikanth Senthil, police commissioner, T R Suresh , superintendent of police, Ravikanthe Gowda, MLC Ivan D’souza paid floral tribute to Gandhiji’s statue in front of Town hall.
Later an inter-religious prayer was held at Town Hall. U T Khader attended the programme as the chief guest while Vedavyas Kamath, MLA, Mangaluru South presided over the programme.
Inaugurating the programme Khader said, "Every year we observe Gandhi Jayanthi by remembering his thoughts, life, and his leadership for our country's freedom fight. But I feel we are limiting it only for a one day or week. We need to remember Gandhi in all 365 days of our lives. His teachings get more and more importance and relevance these days. Peace, non-violence, harmony and discipline were the trademarks of Mahatma Gandhi. Entire universe accepted thoughts of Gandhiji. So this day is celebrated in various parts of the world.”
“In our country some anti-social elements try to defame Gandhiji and oppose his thoughts. But all these things are temporary. Without Gandhiji we cannot imagine a peaceful and strong India. So today's generation need to know more and more about our father of nation,” he added.
Ravikanthe Gowda addressing the gathering said, "It is not right to adore Mahathma Gandhi only as a leader of freedom fight. We should be broad minded to accept his life and thoughts. He is the only saint who worked for inter-religious faith. He is the only saint who lived a clean public life and personal life. He is an inspiration for us all. If we follow his path, we will get success in personal life and public."
In his presidential speech Vedavyas Kamath said, "We all know about Mahathma Gandhiji’s life and his leadership for our country's freedom fight. But majority of us never try to find the meaning and message of his life and teachings. Our generation must learn these things,”
Students of various schools, officials of various government departments, members of social organisation were present in large number and participated in the inter-religious prayer.
