New Delhi, Oct 3: While speculations are rife that Divya Spandana aka Ramya, stepped down from her post as Congress party’s social media chief, the actor turned politician has rubbished the news as rumours.
“I am currently on leave and will join office on Thursday,” she told a TV news channel.
The speculation started after the bio on Divya’s Twitter page was changed. There was no mention of her association with the Congress party. Also, a prolific tweeter, Divya has been mum on social media since the last three days.
When asked to comment, Divya said that it is due to a bug in her twitter profile.
Nikhil Alva to take over Divya’s role?
Meanwhile, party sources say that Divya was upset that most of her work was transferred to Nikhil Alva, son of Congress veteran Margaret Alva. Nikhil handles Rahul Gandhi’s twitter handle, claim sources.
However, when a TV news channel asked him, he denied taking any key role adding that he can’t comment on rumours and that he is abroad.
Divya has also remained absent in the party's leadership meeting in Wardha in Maharashtra to mark the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. This was the first Congress Working Committee meeting outside Delhi since 2013, and was important in view of the upcoming 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
Embroiled in controversies
While BJP always outshone Congress in its online perception battle, Divya Spandana taking over as social media head in May, 2017 brought a turnaround. Under her leadership, the Congress social media timeline gained prominence, and many praised her for Congress become suddenly popular on Twitter.
However, recently she has been embroiled in a number of controversies.
Congress sources confirm that the party president was not happy with Divya Spandana's recent tweets targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The UP police has filed a sedation case against Divya after she posted a photoshopped image of PM Modi, with the word 'chor' (Hindi for thief) on the forehead of his wax statue.
In another tweet, she posted a truncated video of PM Modi, which misled people about his educational qualifications.
She has also been dragged into a sexual harassment case within her team, where she has been accused of looking the other way when complained to about the misconduct.
Profile updated again
After the controversy, Divya Spandana’s profile has been updated again. Her bio now reads, “Actor, Former Member of Parliament, currently handling Social Media & Digital Communications for the Congress party & I <3 it!” which seems to be in reply to her resignation rumours.
