Mangaluru, Oct 6: On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, The Yenepoya School, Jeppinamogaru, here, organized street plays and beach and park cleaning drives on the theme 'Swachh Bharath Abhiyan'.
The student guides of The Yenepoya School cleaned Yekkur bus stand and the residential street, after which the students were addressed on the importance of cleanliness by the Yekkur corporator, Praveen Alva. The students of grades 6 to 9, were part of the Ullal beach and Kadri Park cleaning drives. They collected plastic waste, food waste, bottles, unwanted leaves and twigs, wrappers etc.
The students of grade 4 and 5 took part in cleaning of The Yenepoya School Campus. Two street plays were also put up by the students at two different parts of Mangaluru city.
27 students from grades 7, 8 and 9 performed at the Thokottu Junction. They put up an act in different languages, creating awareness on the importance of a clean city. The district Congress secretary, Khalid Ujire, inaugurated the programme and gave an inspirational speech. Another street play was put up by 14 Students at The Mangaluru City Corporation with the assistance of the principal, Joseph Mechirath, campus director, Mishria Javeed and programme leader, Reshma Nayak. The mayor of Mangaluru, Bhaskar K Moily, deputy mayor, Mohammed Kunjathbail, commissioner of Mangaluru City Corporation, Mohamad Nazeer, Rotary Club president, Santosh Shet and Rotary Club secretary, Joel were also present at the event.
Sumathi, a sanitation worker was felicitated on the occasion for her good work. The principal, Joseph Mechirath spoke a few words on the importance of Swacch Bharath. A floral tribute was paid to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the Mangaluru City Corporation Circle.
In addition to these events, a special assembly was conducted by the students of grade 7C at The Yenepoya School campus grounds, which began with the garlanding of the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi and an inspirational skit along with a song and speech on the importance of celebrating this day. Both, the members of the faculty of The Yenepoya School along with the students, participated actively with their wholehearted co-operation in making these events a huge success.
The environmentalist Madhu S Manohar was thanked for compèring the programme at Mangalore City Corporation and Abbakka TV for their media coverage of these events was also appreciated.
