Mangaluru, Oct 25: Mangalore institute of Oncology will conduct a breast cancer awareness programme on October 27 at Mangalore Institute of Oncology premises at Pumpwell in the city.

 Addressing media here on Thursday, October 25, consultant surgical oncology Dr Jalaluddin Akbar K C said, "During this awareness programme, breast self examination will be taught, clinical examination and ultra sound/mammogram (if indicated). Breast cancer is currently the first most common cancer in urban India and second common in rural India. In India due to late presentation and lack of awareness of screening among women, there is a direct decrease in the quality and survival rate of breast cancer patients,"

"Due to awareness and screening, breast cancer is diagnosed at an early stage, resulting in more cure, less suffering and better quality of life. But in India majority of breast cancer patients present in advanced stages, due to various reasons such as illiteracy, lack of awareness, availability of screening, fear and financial crisis."


“We can decrease the number of breast cancer deaths by early detection and better treatments for women and it is only possible with aggressive promotion of awareness, screening and quality treatment”, said Dr Jalalludin Akbar.
