Udupi, Oct 26: Sand issues have become acute in the coastal district. Building constructions, employment of labourers and related financial activities have stopped. Meanwhile a man who had borrowed a loan of Rs 6 lac rupees has died due to heart attack on Friday, October 26.

Hejamady resident Mohammed Haneef (42) is the deceased person.

Indefinite protests are in progress against the government in front of Udupi deputy commissioner’s office since the last two days. Mohammed Haneef who took part in the protests died of heart attack allegedly caused by his financial woes.

Haneef had borrowed Rs 6 lac loan and bought two country boats. He had created a deck beside the river to extract sand. As sand mining had completely stopped, he was tensed.

Haneef had three children. He was preparing to get one of his daughters married. He was staying in a rented house with his wife and always took part in protests demanding sand mining. Haneef collapsed when he heard from officials that his sand deck was in sensitive area. He experienced chest pain and he was taken to the government hospital. He was later shifted to Manipal KMC hospital for further treatment. He died subsequently after massive heart attack.

It is said that Haneef was also fed up with pressure from lenders.

There are calls for compensation from the government and district administration to the family of Haneef.
