Mangaluru, Oct 27: During the police phone-in programme held on Friday October 26, a caller attracted the attention of the police to risks posed by auto rickshaws, Maruti vans etc which ferry students much in excess of their capacities. The caller said that in case of accidents, several lives can be lost at a time because of the precarious way in which these vehicles ply.

The programme was presided over by deputy commissioner of police (DCP - crime and traffic), Uma Prashanth, at the office of the police commissioner.

Responding to the complaint, the DCP recollected that in the past, police personnel, owners and drivers of vehicles etc were suitably instructed about the need to limit children being carried in the vehicles. She said that the operation will again be carried out against this problem. When a person from Yedapadavu complained about the road from his village to the city being filled with potholes, the DCP promised to check whether it is a city corporation road or PWD road and to take up the issue with the concerned.

A person wanted barricades that are put up during the visit of dignitaries to be immediately cleared after the motorcade leaves. Uma Prashanth promised to issue strict instructions to police on this issue. In reply to another caller who said that accidents in Moodbidri are occurring because of several youngsters moving around in motor bikes, the DCP said a proposal to set up traffic police station in Moodbidri has been sent in view of increased traffic accidents in that area.

About 30 calls were received during the phone-in programme on Friday. DCP (law and order), Hanumantharaya, assistant commissioner of police, Manjunath Shetty, inspectors, Amaunlla A, H Shivaprakash, Kamala etc were present.
