Bangalore:59 Squadron of Indian Air Force Presented Presidential Standard

Bangalore, Nov 13: President Pratibha Patil on Wednesday paid rich tributes to 59 squadron of the Indian Air Force and the Air Force Technical College (AFTC) as the embodiment of dedication, professionalism and selfless service and sacrifice for the sake of the nation.

Patil was addressing the officers, men and the senior officers of the IAF after presenting the Presidential Standard to 59 squadron and Presidential Colours to the AFTC at an impressive ceremonial parade at Jalahalli here.

March past

The men from the recipient units participated in an impressive march past, and there was flag trooping by Mi-8 helicopters, an aerial salute by Chetak helicopters and a fly past by Avro, Dornier and An-32 aircraft. The Hawks (advanced jet trainers) in a Vic formation added lustre to the occasion, culminating in a breathtaking aerobatics by the Sarang helicopter aerobatic display team.

Ceremony

The presentation ceremony was graced by Governor Rameshwar Thakur and Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, and attended by Air Chief Marshal Fali Homi Major and other senior IAF officers. Wg Cdr S M Wahid of the 59 Squadron received the Standard, while Air Cmde Rajiv Mittal, Commandant of the AFTC, was presented the Colours by the President.

Origin

The origin of the standard and colours can be traced back to the war epics of India, Egypt, Greece and Rome.

The standard and colours used to serve two purposes then — as a distinguishing mark among the tribes and races and as a rallying point in battle.

These signs also helped in quick identification of friend and foe.

Vital role

The President recalled the vital role played by 59 squadron in 1962 and 1971 wars, as well as its efforts in relief operations during the 2004 tsunami.

She termed the squadron as the lifeline of soldiers and civilian population in the northeast.

Certification

The ability to absorb latest technology and creating a pool of competent military and aeronautical engineers paved the way for the AFTC to be awarded with the ISO certification.

Release

The President also released an information brochure and a special cover and cancellation by Army Postal Service.
