Centre doing politics over agricultural insurance: Mamata

Kolkata, Dec 26 (IANS): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday accused the Central government of doing politics in providing funds for agricultural insurance scheme.

Banerjee said for the farmers' agricultural insurance scheme, both Central government and the state government provide the funds.

"Our government has paid the amount to the office of the insurance company for the farmers. But while allocating money, people are claiming that the entire amount is being given by the Central government. They are doing politics with the scheme," she said.

Banerjee said that she has heard that in some blocks of Sagar island of South 24 Parganas district and in another block in Howrah's Uluberia, the Agricultural Insurance Company claimed that the entire money was being given by the Centre.

She said that her government does not want any kind of sympathy and can also pay the Centre's share in the scheme.

"We don't want their money. Our government can look after the farmers of the state. The Centre's measures are such that the farmers in Nashik are compelled to sell onions at less than Rs 2 per kilogram," she pointed out.

Banerjee said under the current regime at the Centre, almost 12,000 farmers have committed suicide so far.
