Mangaluru, Jan 3: Districts in coastal belt of Karnataka have been experiencing severe cold during the nights and early mornings since the last some days. By the coastal standards, cold here can be described as severe.

People begin to experience cold weather since the evenings and it lasts till around 9 am the next day. There has been volatility in minimum and maximum temperatures. Meteorological department sources say that during the last one week, minimum temperature here has seen a drop of two degree Celsius. In Dakshina Kannada district, minimum temperature of 17 degree Celsius was recorded early morning on Thursday January 3. The department said that this is nearly four degrees below normal.

The cold wave here has been attributed to creation of low pressure area over the sea at Andaman, which has given rise to clouds. During the 24 hours ending 8.30 am on Wednesday, northern interior Karnataka experienced severe cold wave while southern interior regions too reeled under cold weather. Bidar recorded minimum temperature of 7.2 degree, which was the lowest in the state. Panambur here recorded 35.4 degree Celsius on Tuesday, which is highest in the entire country, meteorology department sources added.
