Mangaluru, Jan 5: President of Konkani Sahitya Academy, R P Nayak, said that the academy has planned a Konkani campaign titled 'Village to Delhi - Delhi to Dubai' to create awareness among the youngsters and students about the advantages of learning Konkani language.

He was addressing a press meet here on Friday, January 4.

Nayak stated that currently, Konkani language awareness programmes are being organized in select villages of Uttara Kannada district. The valedictory of the programme will be held in Dubai, he added.

"Certificate courses in Konkani music and theatre are being held in schools. Mangalore University has been conducting MA classes in Konkani. Unless 300 SSLC students take part in Konkani examination in SSLC, Konkani cannot be introduced as a subject in PUC. Therefore, more and more students should opt for learning Konkani as third language when in high school," he stressed.

He said that the academy has decided to publish 100 books covering social information concerning Konkani, and that 70 among them are ready. "30 more are under different stages of preparation, and they will be published soon. We are also trying to air Konkani programmes through Akashvani," he explained.

Replying to questions raised by media persons, R P Nayak said that the government has not yet taken a final decision to allot the site in the city that has been identified for building Konkani Bhavan. Therefore, he said that the building will be constructed if some donors come forward to donate site for the purpose. He said that Karnataka University Dharwad has evinced interest to construct Konkani Bhavan and donors from Uttara Kannada district have come forward to provide land for the construction.

Academy members, Nagesh Anvekar, Damodar Bhandarkar, and Santosh Shenoy were present at the press meet.
