Mangalore: Kinnigoly Bandh in Protest against Murder

Mangalore, Jan 13: In response to a call for bandh given by Hindu organizations in protest against the murder of a local resident named Mohan Ranya (35) at around 9.30 pm on Sunday January 11, all the shops and establishments in Kinnigoly and the nearby Moorukaveri town downed their shutters on Monday January 12. Even the buses did not ply in these places.
Leaders of some Hindu organizations demonstrated against the above killing, by squatting on the main roads of these towns. Hindu organizations as well as the BJP leaders have threatened to undertake district-wide stir if the miscreants involved are not brought to book within 48 hours.
Some suspect that this murder has something to do with the slaining of a youth in Katipalla near Suratkal on January 10. Mohan Ranya was a simple man, who did not have connections with any organizations just like the youth from Katipalla murdered earlier, and did not mingle with others. He was going home after taking part in some religious programmes. It is felt, that the saffron robes he wore in preparation for his pilgrimage to Shabarimala might have attracted the ire of anti-social elements.
His body was taken out in a procession from Kinnigoly town to his home. BJP leaders Jagadish Adhikari, K Bhuvanabhirama Udupa, Satish Bhat, Namadev Kamath etc., took part in the protest. Schools in Kinnigoly and Kateel area declared holiday on Monday.
Chairman of Coastal Development Authority B Nagaraj Shetty who met the protestors, promised to arrange for the payment of a compensation of one lac rupees to the family of the deceased. He also said there is a need to provide additional funds to the family as the deceased was the only bread-winner of the family. MLA K Abhaychandra Jain who visited the family, held the failure of the government in maintaining law and order responsible for the murder of innocent people. Ex union minister B Janardan Poojary promised to bear educational expenses of the children in the family. Mohan Ranya who had married recently, also bore the responsibility of the two daughters of his younger brother, who died some time time ago due to ill health.
A case has been registered in Mulky station. The sniffer dogs led the policemen from the place of death to Moorukaveri junction. A piece of the sabre found at the spot has been taken away by the policemen.
