Udupi: Sugunendra Tirtha Swamiji Seeks More Autonomy for Temples

Udupi, Jan 16: Sugunendra Tirtha Swamiji of Paryaya Puttige Math said on Thursday that temples should be given more autonomy so that they could provide better facilities to pilgrims. He was speaking at the inaugural function of the conference of managing trustees (‘dharmadarshis’) of Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kasaragod (Kerala) districts, here.















The seer alleged that the temples which were under the Muzrai Department were subject to a kind of “permit raj” as the governing councils of such temples had to obtain permission to even undertake small repair works. Temples should formulate an action plan to bring about social change in society. Tax exemption should be given to religious activities as was being done in the United States. Temples should take the initiative in starting schools, he said. Vishwesha Tirtha Swamiji of Pejawar Math said that increasing the Government control in temples would lead to more corruption.

    There is no doubt the present Muzrai policy of the karnataka govt. puts some restrictions on the Muzrai temples. As Sri Sugunendra Thirtha swamiji said temples should be given more autonomy. But that is to provide better facilities to pilgrims. Heads of Mutts should see that there is no discrimination between the castes in feeding the pilgrims in the temples.

    Rightly said by the Swamiji. Temples should be left to their own like other religious places. Why should the govt interfere in it?
