Mangalore, Jan 15: On the Makara Sankramana Day, which fell on Wednesday January 14 this year, the flag post (Dhwaja Stambha) of Kadri Manjunatheshwara Temple, was installed. This marks the beginning of the annual festivities at the temple.

The festivities will go on till the 22nd of this month. Main attractions of the festival will be 'Deepotsav' or festival of lights, scheduled to be held on the 20th of the month  and the car festival slated for the 21st.

Variety cultural events are also being held every evening at the special dais earmarked for the purpose. These events, which started to be staged since the 13th of January will go on till the 24th of January.

Kadri Manjunatheshwara temple is one of the most ancient temples of the region, mention of which is found in several mythological books. The temple is known for its seven sacred tanks and a natural water point which gives out water continuously all through the year, even when the entire region goes dry. This water is treated to be holy and people, apart from reverently drinking it, also sprinkle some of it on their bodies as a means of purification from evil or negative elements.
