M'lore: Nehru Maidan Erupts with Patriotic Feelings as Republic Day Function Unfolds

Mangalore, Jan 26:  The district level Republic Day celebrations held at the Nehru Maidan here today, were interspersed with colourful programmes.
 
Delivering the Republic Day address after hoisting the national flag on this occasion, district-in-charge minister J Krishna Palemar said, "We Indians believe in democracy and each Indian need to be fully aware of their constitutional rights, obligations and values. Leading India towards a stronger and united nation must be our paramount goal,” he  said. The state government has been providing adequate  funds for the needy  projects and schemes  including the new ones and it is concerned about the welfare of all the sections of the society, he said.    
 


Palemar inspected the guard of honour led by Karnataka State Reserve police, District Armed Reserve Police, traffic police, state fire commandos, fire service, home guards, army senior-junior, naval senior-junior, air force senior-junior, Naval Cadet Corps(NCC) and Bharath Seva Dal, besides scouts and guides.

Western Range inspector general of police  A M  Prasad, district deputy commissioner V  Ponnuraj,  superintendent of police Sateesh Kumar, Mangalore south MLA Yogish Bhat,  Mangalore U T Khader, city mayor Ganesh Hosabettu, zilla panchayat president K P Sucharitha Shetty and other guests and officials from various departments were present. 
 

Felicitation to 22 achievers

22 people drawn from various fields were felicitated by the district administration on this occasion, in recognition of their achievements and accomplishments, as mentioned below:

Dr Manjunath Nayak, Prof of surgery in Wenlock Hospital who participated in the annual marathon for five years in New York at the age of 56, Disha Amruth, NCC cadet,  Mayur S Kumar for achievement in skating, Viani Antonio D'Cunha for chess, Rashmi of Padmunja in Belthangady for Javelin Throw,  Gloria Nisha Pais for international level Voko Karate, Susan Liza D'Souza for power lifting, Carrol Monteiro for high jump, Uma Bhagyalaxmi for 60-meter race at international level and the girls Kabaddi team (below 14 years) for getting first place in the national level and the girls volleyball team for securing third place at the national level.
 
Students from  various  schools presented  multi-lingual dances along with patriotic songs.

Street plays and skits were also performed by the students on the subjects of communal harmony, terrorism etc.


Vintage car rally

In addition, a vintage car rally was organized as part of the Republic Day programmes. The four-wheeled beauties of yester-years which started from Nehru Maidan moved majestically on city roads, taking the old timers down the memory lane and astonishing the younger generation with their breath-taking looks.

    Thanks Daiji for giving us opportunity to see our native celebration away from home. It reminds me of my school/college days and my participation in march past in Nehru Maidan. Without NCC army wing (senior and juniors, Senior NCC- Naval and Air force wing the march past in above report celebration looks incomplete.

    look at the first picture and see how the cop is saluting the flag. do we need such cops. who do not even know how to salute our nations flag?

    Looks great. It is however sad to see our Police force carrying 1st World War guns. No wonder that 40,000 of this force in Mumbai could not crush 10 Terrorists with modern weapons.
