Mangalore: Six Vehicles Damaged in Stone Pelting, Torching Incidents

Mangalore, Jan 27: Three lorries and an equal number of buses were damaged due to stone pelting incidents that occurred at Padil-Alape on national highway 48 in the city limits, in the wee hours on Tuesday January 27.
A gang of youth pelted stones and tried to set two trucks on fire. Window shields of both the lorries were shattered and cabin portions of both the lorries suffered damage due to fire. The drivers and conductors of the trucks were able to extinguish the fire with available water and other sources before it engulfed the vehicles.
"The gang had six to seven persons who started pelting stones and torching the vehicles that came their way at around 4.30 to 5 am," said Murugesh, one of the lorry drivers.
All the three lorries targeted by the miscreants were moving towards Tumkur and Chitradurga after unloading iron ore at Panambur port. The drivers and conductors were spared by the rioters. Another lorry came under a hail of pebbles near Kannur.
Stones were also pelted at two buses belonging to KSRTC, one of which was a Volvo, at Padil. Glasses of two buses suffered damages. The trouble mongers also targeted a city bus near Kannur.
The Volvo bus was moving towards Kundapur from Chennai, which had passengers. The passengers escaped unhurt in the incident.
On Tuesday January 27 morning, city buses traveling towards Jalligugudde, Veeranagara etc., were also interrupted by the road blocks created by the miscreants on the Padil-Bajal road.
Police sources believe that the incidents were the handiwork of the protestors who were angered by the arrest of Prasad Attavar, state convener of Sri Rama Sena.
Mangalore Rural police have registered cases in this regard on the basis of complaints filed by the vehicle drivers. The policemen visited the spots and deployed Karnataka State Reserve Police personnel at a few strategic points to control the situation.
Late night on January 26, the police had arrested Prasad Attavar and Lohit Adyar from a house in Adyar near the city.
