Mangalore: Varsity Confers Honourary Doctorates on Seven Eminent Personalities

Mangalore, Jan 29: Universities churn out the most cultured citizens for the society, said Prof D P Agarwal, chairman, union public service commission, at the 27th convocation of Mangalore University here on Wednesday, January 28.
He was delivering the convocational address at the varsity. “India has got thousands of years of history and we have great historians, innovators and others, who made India rich in every field. Now, the Universities are the best places to provide such people”, said Prof Agarwal.
A major part of post graduates serve society with their cultured education. But we have to remember many people have worked their way up from the footpath and they are today successful people too. So, we cannot compare the two, he added.
Aravind Limbavali, minister for higher education, was the chief guest.
The University presented honourary doctorates to seven achievers from various fields. They were N Vinaya Hegde, vice-chancellor, Nitte University, P Dayananda Pai , entrepreneur and philanthropist, M K Panduranga Setty, educationist, Y M Chandrashekara Sharma, legal expert, M Mukunda Prabhu, researcher, A Shivathanu Pillai, scientist, and B V Acharya, legal expert.
Doctorate fellowships were given to 62 individuals while 29 students received gold medals. Sixty-two rank students were also honoured.
Vice-chancellor K M Kaveriappa welcomed all. Registrar Prem Kumar was also present.
