Mangalore: Solidarity Meet Condemns Attack on Women

Mangalore, Jan 31: Women and men from all walks of society enthusiastically participated in the solidarity meet organized at Kadri Park today in protest against violence against women following the attack on pub.  The meeting provided a forum for concerned citizens to voice their opinion against this incident and also offer suggestions.  Both women and men who spoke they condemn the incident and said they bow their heads in shame as a result of the beating of women by the self-style moral police in the name of culture.  

There was a consensus among most of the speakers who voiced the concern about the growing incidents of violence against women in Mangalore and felt that women and men have finally come together in protest against incidents of this nature, which should have been done much earlier.  Some of the speakers expressed concern over the dilution of the issue by member of National Commission for Women Nirmala Venkatesh who was on a fact finding mission to Mangalore. 

Many participants felt that the meeting was just a beginning and the issue needs to pursued with the same vigor and enthusiasm. Members also expressed concern over the failure of victims to come forward and lodge a complaint against culprits which, they felt has weakened the entire case.  It was suggested that victims should come forward to file a complaint in order to bring the culprits to book.    
 
Though the number of participants was much less than expected initially it grew in strength as the discussion was going on.  Many men participated and spoke in the meeting expressing the solidarity with women.
