New Delhi: NCW Member Gets Notice Over Mangalore Pub Probe

New Delhi, Feb 6: The ministry of women and child development, headed by Renuka Chowdhury, on Thursday evening issued a show-cause notice to National 

Commission for Women (NCW) member Nirmala Venkatesh, who probed the pub attack on women in Mangalore, for her "unbecoming" action and "dereliction of duty".



"Your acts are unbecoming of a member of the National Commission for Women. These are detrimental to public interest. You are required to explain your conduct and why action should not be taken against you for dereliction of duty," a ministry statement said.

Nirmala Venkatesh, who led an NCW team to probe the Jan 24 attack on women in a Mangalore pub, instead of denouncing the outrage, said that the pub did "not have enough security" and that "women have to safeguard themselves". She also shifted the probe focus to whether or not the pub had the licence to serve liquor.

The NCW subsequently distanced itself from Venkatesh's remarks and dubbed her report "null and void".

A mob of about 40 Hindu radicals from an outfit called Sri Ram Sene assaulted women at the pub, molested them and dragged them by their hair - in the name of protecting Indian culture.

      I am sad to note the statements exchanged between Nirmala Venkatesh and Renuka Chowdhury. I feel Nirmala totally deviated from the real issue. Instead of restricting her comments to the treatment meeted to the female youth her remarks about women's security and pub activities are irrelevent. A lady in such a position should have realised her responsibility instead she moved into commercial territory by making comments about the licence of the pub. Certainly it gave wrong signals. E.       i think, it is high time that suffering people of Mangalore (in lacs) open their minds and face the dirty society criminals (around 100 ppl only) and teach them a lesson rather than government to handle the situation. This will ensure that all the problems are solved within a week than awit for a biased report of Nirmala Venkatesh (also a lady) to delay further.

      Looks like people enjoy bashing Ramsena. But many people are hypocrytical to accept allowing underage girls inisde pub is more crime than what ramasene did. If it was in USA, The people accompanying such underage girls will be booked for Rape. Come on people get life..Just dont be blind...Think whatever happened is good even if it is wrong. May be it is lesson for parents to take care of the teeaged girls

      Shame on Congai led UPA Govt & Ms Renuka Chowdhury. If Commission for Women (NCW) member Ms Nirmala Venkatesh reports favors Times Now, NDTV, CNN-IBN or Congai (UPA Govt) then she would have bestowed with the Padma awards or some promotion.

      2 years back two Degree students of Local reputed Private College (boy and girl) toured some places of Mangalore, freely on Sunday and haulted in a lodge.2 days later this news published in a Evening paper with College name. The principal dismissed this two students. No secular wings interfered. Two teen aged students lost their precious students life???

      Like all government appointed Commissions, the NCW too is filled with members who have political connections, mostly the wives and daughters of political heavyweights. These women enjoy the power and perks that go with the position, rarely called upon to be transparent or accountable in what they do. So Nirmala who comes across as arrogant and complecent would belong to this category. Instead of doing her job of addressing the molestation of girls in the pub, she has taken sides. She shows no concern or feelings for the girls who were molested- whether they did right or wrong by going to the pub is NOT the issue here... why? Is she a sypathyser of the Hindu Fandamentalists? Has she been appointed as a favour to her husband for his loyalty to the BJP? All this needs to be investigated. And the reason for her dodging the issue will be evident.

      Nirmala proved she is highly incompetent for the job. Going with her over simplified and senseless logic, the 26/11 mumbai attack blame should have been on Tata & Oberoi Management. Three things should be done immediately, 1. she should be sacked, 2. her account need to checked and 3. NCW need to ensure competent people working for it.

      It is obvious that the NCW is filled with people having different political affiliations. As such it cannot function independently, justly and fairly. The Mangalore pub attack report by Mrs. Venkatesh and also her actions in Mangalore are a clear indication of this. NCW is a joke and has lost its credibility. Maybe we should isolate India from the rest of the world and remain poor and backward. Then only our so called [dictated by a bunch of thugs] culture can be preserved

      The purpose for which Nirmala Venkatesh was sent was defeated while putting the real issue in context. The laxity and security aspect on part of the pub owner is a secondary issue. The main issue that people were assaulted under the guise that they were wrong doing is absolutely atrocious. There is law and the so called Ram Sene should have taken the help of these law enforcement people. It is really admirable and worth appreciating the stance taken by Mrs. Renuka in issuing show cause notice to Nirmala. She should be sacked so that such people do not use the government machinery and funds to waste time and endorse injustice.

      What ever action by the NCW or Renuka Chaudhary on this Issue is not Important. The very key issue is It is not the time to discuss on the Pub, but it is more important to take action on the miscrants who attacked and molested the women irrespective of the age.This too happened in a largest democratic nation in the world with a woman president.

      I am not in favour of pub culture I am also not in favour of youth (major or minor) indulging themselves in the pubs or such places. Question Ms. Nirmala Venkatesh was supposed to answer was the attack by the Sena on people induging themselves (young girls in this case). Has Nirmala Venkatesh bothered to answer the question? Pub licencing issue is to be answered by the licencing authority. Underage youth's presence in restricted places and their indulging in any restricted activities (legal or moral) is to be monitored by the respective authority. Who has empowered SRS to curb this activity and take it upon themselves. Well, they are welcome to take the issue to the concerned authorities and better still they could take steps towards enlightening people - youth as well as elders - by using any of the acceptable means (legal or social). Having said all this - I too feel Ms. Venkatesh has not done justice to the task entrusted to her.

      Mrs.Renuka Chowdary is really taking the right step .NCW must give the real and actual findings about the incident and not give their verdict of their own. Mrs. Girija Vyas should clarify since she is the head of NCW. I hope the minister of child and women welfare Mrs. Renuka Chowadary will give her fair verdict about Mangalore pub attack on innoncent women .

      Looks like Renuka Chaudhary wants the report the way she likes. So she is targetting Nirmala Venkatesh for her report. We believe so that the two girls beaten are related to prominant personalities of Mangalore. One was a 15 year old . In any other  country accompanying minor girls to pubs and indecent behaviour equate to Rape. People are making a hue and cry about Ramsene. But what about this case??? They say victims are scared to give a report.  Their guardians are big time influential people. So it is better to understand the pulse of the people than just hyping the beating of Ramasena (though it is wrong)
