Bangalore: Ram Sene to Marry off Dating Couples on Valentine's Day

TNN

Bangalore, Feb 6:
With `lasting love' as his mantra, Sri Rama Sene chief Pramod Muthalik on Thursday said dating couples in Karnataka would be forced to tie the knot on Valentine's Day.

"Love is an emotional and bonding issue. I am not against love. But it should not be confined to one particular day, rather it should be expressed all through the year,'' Muthalik told reporters. Returning quickly to his agenda, he added: ``Valentine's Day is a Western concept and most often celebrated by Christians. We will try to stall the celebrations at any cost.''

The fuss over Valentine’s Day celebration by the self-styled moral police now appears to be getting on Bangalore’s nerves. Clearly unwilling to let themselves face a culture shock of sorts by spoilsports of the Sri Rama Sene who have threatened to ruin the celebrations, youth wings of many parties and student leaders have vowed to keep the city safe and peaceful on February 14.

Progressive voices said they would take on the Sene and not allow them to intimidate students. Who are these people to decide what others should do, they asked. On its part, the ruling BJP said though Valentine’s Day was not our culture, it would not oppose it. The government did not seem to have any new plan of action to counter Sene’s threat.

Valentine's Day paves the way for outraging the modesty of women, he claimed, adding that he has records to prove that 38 girls were raped in Mumbai, New Delhi and Kolkata last year on this day. To register their protest, the Sene would submit a memorandum to governor Rameshwar Thakur, CM B S Yeddyurappa, home minister V S Acharya and Bangalore police commissioner Shankar Bidari, urging a ban on Valentine's Day.

Asked why the Sene was focusing on Valentine's Day, while rape, murders and exploitation of women is an everyday affair in the country, Muthalik said his organization was also working towards that issue. He claimed to have rehabilitated many women in distress. The Sene has been opposing Father's Day, Mother's Day and Friendship Day for the last decade, he said.

On Wednesday afternoon, Rashtriya Hindu Sena chief Pramod Mutalik went into a huddle with his band of supporters and declared war on what he called “anti-Indian” practices. The Sene asked the government, heads of educational institutions and the police to discourage this “Christian practice of celebrating Valentine’s Day’’.

Thwarting V-Day

  • Sene to submit memorandum to government to ban celebrations
  • Write letters to colleges, hotels and greeting card shop owners not to promote V-Day on their premises
  • Ask colleges to take strict action against students who celebrate
  • In Bangalore, to protest before restaurants in prime areas promoting V-Day

Wedding March

  • Tie-or-die is still the Sri Rama Sene's slogan — firming up plans to marry off dating couples, they said it will have to be either the knot or the rakhi
  • Sene has formed five teams comprising a number of members
  • They will roam around Bangalore, holding a video camera and a turmeric stub
  • On spotting young couples dating, they will be forced to tie the knot, not on the spot, but in a temple
  • The couples would be taken to a sub-registrar's office to solemnize the marriage
  •  In case they are brothers and sisters, they will be forced to tie a rakhi
  • However, the Sene is silent on married couples. ``In that case we cannot do anything,'' Muthalik said

Roses and Thorns

Muthalik's response to Renuka Chowdhury's comments on his bachelorhood and ignorance of love: "Being a bachelor does not mean that I do not know anything about love. I am born in a cultured family. I love my parents, sisters and brothers. I welcome her to Bangalore on February 14, as she intends to come here.''

However, he did not comment on whether he would accept a rose given by Renuka with sisterly affection, if she were to.

Dressing Down for Girls?

Girls are free to wear anything they like. I have never commented about the dress code.

I think you are living in the prehistoric time. No religion states that rules have to be imposed on anyone. India is a Democratic country and we are the only country in the world to have various religions, cultures and traditions and we are setting an example world wide, then why this dictatorship? If people had open minds and thought out of the box, then you yourself would agree with me that the statement you made was completely wrong. Lets make our future generation more proactive to peace, love, joy and happiness.

Amazing to see how Pramod Muthalik & his Ram Sena have brought Indians into the limelight. As though we have not got enough shame into our society by our leaders, here comes another goon to sort the society. Either Pramod Muthalik & his followers have been jobless due to their incompetence or an aggressive streak and look for ways of gaining attention by creating such a havoc.

Has anyone ever heard of any person with a job at hand having time to create chaos for something which can be sorted out through peaceful modes? All the goons in the society are created by politicians who employ them to threaten the crowd & then behave as though they are the leaders of the masses. It is the ignorance of our very own people who do not stand up against such miscreants together.

Who can rule unless we allow them to? Why can't the youngsters in our society enter politics, come up with better solutions to benefit our country? Strange but true, we are responsible for destroying the face of our own country. Go on Mangloreans, get rid of this unemployed man once and for all who is another example to an extremist spoiling the name of religion!!

Muthalik & his followers should be given a better job by the central govt., by stocking them with enough of arms & amunations & heading them right to siachen to defend the country. Let them prove their loyalty, their guts, their patriotrism, their courage etc etc.like their counterparts did in mumbai & not bully our own citizens. They are becoming a menace to the society.

If the Central and the State Govt. does not play its role with discretion there may be civil war and communal riots with this ideology. When there is an attack on democracy and people's fundamental rights, things might take a bad shape. All the citizens should coordinate themselves to stop the forthcoming evil for the society.

just shows how ill-informed this person is!! Mr. Muthalik, at least get your facts straight before you and your sene jump to wrong conclusions and create havoc in our dear city. Valentine's day holds a special meaning for most of us who know the emotion of love and friendship. I would like to celebrate the day with my family and friends. But what would you know of finer feelings? I feel sorry for you and people of your kind who know to destroy without knowing how to build. No religion or culture preaches hatred or destruction. Which religion and culture are you following? It definitely couldnt be the religion of our ancestors.

Persons of different political origins & other supporters should challenge the Rama Sena on Valentine day/ other day with a portest to arrest Rama Sena memebers. Their acts are terrorising women/others.One has a right to beleive in roamntic relationship and practice as enshrined in Constitution of India. Ram Sena= Taliban. Ban Them before India goes to the caveman era.

It is ridiculous! Why don't they put their energy to use in a constructive way. If they are so interested in getting couples married, they should organize mass marriages for the poor and help them to marry. It just shows, a fool can also rule a country like ours. The government has to stop this lunacy and ban this 'Rama Sena'. They have misused the name of Rama too. In addition, before they go against Christianity, they need to know it. Nowhere in the bible does it mention Valentines day to be a Christian tradition.

If you cannot catchup with the world at it's speed, please ship out & say good bye.Try a ride with your bullock cart, never ever try a A/C car, continue wearing mundu & lungi.
