Mangalore, Feb 8: One of the five, arrested on charges of harassing Kerala MLA Kunhambu’s daughter, wore a saffron ‘lungi’ while he was being produced at the judge’s residence on Saturday February 7.
However, when asked by media persons about the organization they belonged to, one had claimed that he was a Marxist while another one had said that he was from the DYFI and the third had claimed to be from the CITU initially and then the AITUC.
The five were produced before the judge by the Pandeswara police team led by inspector Tilakachandra. The superintendent of police Satish Kumar had said in a press meet that none of them belonged to any organization.
The confusion here is that CITU and AITUC are different organizations. While the CITU is the labour union of the CPI (M), the other is a union of the CPI.
“CPI (M) regulations state that its members cannot be part of two organizations. The AITUC is also a leftist organization. The CPI (M) and CPI are different in revolution and understanding the democracy. While the Marxists believe in revolution, the CPI does not”’, said Jayanand, secretary, CPI (M), Manjeswara.
He added, “Media people who know politics of India, do not telecast or publish the lie uttered by the accused. Left organizations are not involved in moral policing or attacking girls on inter-religious matter. The left parties are secular and it suggests that there is no bar to religions”.
‘He is my son, but not leftist’
Kariyappa Shetty, a CPI (M) member from Majibail panchayat in Manjeswara said, “Sathish is a son of mine, but does not agree with Communism and he is not involved in our party activities. He rarely comes home. He stays in Mangalore.”
P P Hegde, lawyer for the accused, said that Sathish, who is a bus conductor, is the son of a CPI(M) member Kariyappa Shetty. He briefed media persons on this after appearing before Judge A N Pattan and filing a bail application.
One of the relatives of Kariyyappa Shetty said that there is no rule that a leftist’s son has to be leftist and can join any party he wants. MLA Kunhambu, when contacted over phone said, “They have turned the case and planned to blame it on the CPI (M)”.
Mangalore: Vigilantes Led By a Lady, Claims MLA

Mangalore, Feb 8: CPI (M) MLA C H Kunhambu on Sunday February 8 alleged that the media and the police in the district have been trying to hide the involvement of a woman in the abduction and assault case of his daughter Shruthi here, recently.
With this, the incident gets another twist after the arrested men were believed to have told police that they belonged to the DYFI, the youth wing of the Communist party. The police have arrested five persons in this connection on Saturday February 7.
Speaking to Daijiworld over phone, the MLA said that according to his daughter, about 100 people were involved in the incident. “The vigilantes were led by a woman. Shruthi has been mentally tortured by her. She was advised on ‘moral’ ethics by the woman’, he said.
Kunchambu claimed that there is an effort taking place to twist the entire matter by branding the accused as the cadres of DYFI. The administrative machinery has collapsed in the district, he alleged.
Meanwhile, speaking to the media, Shruthi said that a lady had translated Kannada words spoken by the vigilantes and directed her not to speak to Muslim friends.
