Udupi, Mar 4: Aralagodu village near Kargal in Sagar taluk, Shivamogga district, which has been the hub of monkey fever epidemic this year, witnessed another death on Sunday March 3. With the demise of a woman suffering from this deadly disease, death toll under this ailment, also known as Kyasanur Forest Disease, has risen to 11.

The latest victim of this fever was Seetamma (58), resident of Yalakodu Poojar Area in Nandodi village, Sagar taluk. After she complained of acute fever on Saturday afternoon, Seetamma was sent to Manipal hospital from Aralagodu at 6 pm for treatment. She passed away the next morning.

Blood samples of the woman have been sent for testing. The disease seemed to have taken a backseat since some days, and incidences of finding monkey carcasses had come down. However, during the last three days, three deaths have occurred. It is said that the woman was administered second phase vaccine against the disease. It is surprising that in spite of preventive measures undertaken by the health department, the disease continues to thrive and claim lives.
