Udupi, Mar 5: A huge protest condemning light fishing and unscientific bull trawl fishing, was held by the Malpe Deep Sea Fishermens’ Association on Tuesday March 5, in front of the office of the deputy director of fisheries at Malpe near here.

The protesters expressed outrage against the fisheries department for not taking any action against the Purse-Seine fishermen who are continuing to conduct fishing unscientifically.

The Purse-Seine fishermen urged the gate of the Malpe port that was closed by the protesters to be opened. At this, pushing and verbal exchange ensued between the two groups of fishermen.

There was heavy police presence at the location where the protest took place. Police tried to pacify the protesters by holding talks with leaders of both the groups. During the intervention of the police, verbal arguments took place between the police and fishermen also.
