Bengaluru, Mar 5: In an incident that occurred on February 26 at a traffic signal near the Raghavendra Swamy Math in JP Nagar second phase, in the city, a bike rider, who was drunk, molested a woman and her husband was beaten badly for objecting to the inappropriate behaviour of the biker.

The police tried to project this as a case of road rage. However, the husband of the victim contested the claim of the police.

As per the details available, the couple, Sumith and his wife Rekha (names changed), residents of Jayanagar in the city, was moving towards JP Nagar on their two-wheeler in order to attend a birthday party. Rekha was on the pillion and was holding the birthday cake. The issue started when Sumit stopped at an intersection as the signal had turned red.

A biker who was on his vehicle next to that of Sumith waiting for the signal started to obseve Rekha in an indecent manner. Though Rekha ignored him initially, she informed the matter to her husband, when the biker started staring at Rekha continuously. Sumith asked the said biker not to stare at his wife. The biker, who got enraged by the advice of Sumith, got down from his bike and started to grope Rekha. When Sumith took an objection to this, the biker hit him repeatedly with his helmet and a fight ensued between the two.

As the couple was going to attend a birthday party, they wanted to cool down the situation and sought an apology from the biker. However, it is said that the biker gathered the mob speaking to them in the local language and calling the couple as outsiders and abused them for not knowing the Kannada language.

Luckily, the couple was rescued by a BMTC staff, who was on his way through the same route and he was able to disperse the crowd that had gathered around the couple. The biker also threatened the couple that he will find their house, beat them up and send them out of Karnataka.

The couple, who were angry by the unreasonable behaviour of the biker, went to the JP Nagar police station to file a complaint against the erring bike rider. Surprisingly, the inebriated biker also followed them into the station in order to file a counter complaint against the couple. However, the biker was arrested by the police after they got convinced of his unruly behavior through the CCTV footage installed at the spot of the incident at the traffic signal.

Kiran S (31) is the culprit who is police custody now. He is said to be working as a salesman in a liquor shop in Peenya and resides in Gourava Nagar in seventh phase of JP Nagar.
