Mangaluru, Mar 6: The bike rally which Dakshina Kannada district Women's Congress had planned to organize in the city had to be cancelled at the last minute as the police refused to give permission for the same.

The Women's Congress had given publicity for the bike rally to be taken out by Women's Congress members from Congress Bhavana here on Tuesday evening. A number of party workers had assembled at the venue, but the organizers had not obtained any written permission from the police department.

A number of policemen led by Kadri police inspector, Maruti Naik, who arrived at the spot after getting information, kept vehicles across the spot and advised the Congress workers not to organize the rally. Thereafter, heated words were exchanged between the police personnel and leaders of Women's Congress.

The police finally relented and said that if the party workers want to take out a rally, all the riders should wear helmets and they should move separately in a disciplined manner.

District Congress president, Harish Kumar, and youth Congress president, Mithun Rai, arrived at the spot, held discussions with the police and convinced Women's Congress leaders to cancel the rally.

Women's Congress president, Shalet Pinto said that the police had been orally informed about the rally. She explained that her party has no plans of creating traffic chaos by holding rally without police protection. She said that respecting law and at the advice of party leaders, the rally was cancelled.

The rally was cut short by raising slogans hailing the party at the starting point itself.
