Udupi: Illegal sand mining – two arrested, lorry with sand seized

Udupi, Mar 27: Naresh, staff of Padubidri police station intercepted a lorry at Hejmady toll gate and arrested two persons for transporting sand illegally and seized the lorry with the sand.

Naresh was on police rounds with home guards PLC Navin late night on March 25 when Padubidri police SI called him at 1.15 am on March 26 saying that sand is being transported without documents from Mangaluru to Udupi in lorry bearing registration number KA19 B 5625. Hence, Naresh stood waiting at Hejmady toll gate for the lorry and arrested Nazeer and Thoufeeq who had filled sand in the lorry, kept plastic trays on the sand and closed by tarpaulin. Another two involved in the crime, Shakir and Riaz, who had followed behind in a Swift car to guard, fled the scene.

The 15 tonne sand in the lorry is said to be worth Rs 15,000. A case has been registered at Padubidri police station.
