Udupi: Contaminated ice candy consumption - more people hospitalised

Udupi, Mar 27: Relating to people getting sick after consuming ice candies which appeared to have been contaminated; more such cases were reported on Tuesday with several getting admitted into hospitals on Tuesday, March 26.

In the meantime, the police have registered case against the owner of an ice candy firm and three workers employed there.

Over a hundred people had got admitted into different hospitals complaining of fever, vomitting and dysentery. People carrying ice candies in motor bikes had sold them in various villages on Saturday and Sunday in the region. Several elders and children developed complications later, and some of them were treated as outpatients while some were admitted into hospitals.

On Tuesday, people from villages like Billadi, Avarse, Heskunda and Kechoor visited hospitals for treatment. Hospitals in Udupi, Belve, Kundapur and Korgi treated 55 new patients. Over 30 people from Mudrady Bachchappu turned ill after consuming ice candy and got admitted into hospital. Hebri panchayat has arranged to announce through microphones mounted on auto rickshaws not to consume substandard ice candies that are sold from door to door. Those who got admitted on Monday are showing signs of improvement. Udupi district health officer Dr Omprakash Kattimani, Kundapur taluk health officer, Dr Nagabhushan Udupa, taluk panchayat executive officer, Kiran Pednekar, and police personnel of Shankaranarayana and Amasebail stations visited the spot and put together more information.

Case was registered against the owner of an ice candy manufacturing unit at Malpe Kalmadi and three of its workers. They were questioned and allowed to go. The health department officials confirmed that there has so far not been any danger to life on account of ice candy consumption so far.
