Mangaluru, Mar 29: 'Hongirana', a home for the elderly and a unit of Louis Mendonca Memorial Trust, was inaugrated at Bendoorwell here on Friday, March 29.

Former MLA J R Lobo inaugrated the old age home by cutting the ribbon. Fr Vincent Monteiro, parish priest, St Sebastian Chuch, Bendore, blessed the new home and led the prayer service.

Donors Andrew L D'Cunha and Ivan D'Souza, Mukamar, representing Dayan(Benmoris, late Benedicta and Maurice Dsouza), owner of the new old age home Mary Patrao, and trustee Errol Mendonca were present at dias.

In his inaugural address J R Lobo said, "It is very easy to talk about social service, but when it comes to doing, it is very difficult. But the members of Louis Mendonca Memorial Trust have been doing social work without any noise or publicity.

"I know that they have been running a similar old age home and doing social service for the past many years. 'Hongirana' is another step towards the care of senior citizens. It is not good to send parents to old age homes. Nuclear families are the main reason for this situation. We have to think about this and avoid such situations. This does not mean that old age homes are not taking proper care of senior citizens. The old age home run by Oliver and Errol is already known for giving cent percent care to elders, and with the same intention, today they opened 'Hongirana'. I wish all the best for their future projects and a pleasant stay to all who are going to reside in this home."

Appreciating the efforts put into opening the new old age home, Fr Vincent said, "Nowadays old age homes reflect the tough situation in our society. It is a fact that our elders need special care, but because of the pressures of daily life, many of the current generation fail in taking care of their parents. In such situations they look for the best old age homes for them where they can live happily. I know the trustees of Louis Mendonca Memorial Trust very well. They are very genuine and sincere in their mission. So I can say with confidence the elders who get admitted to 'Hongirana' will get homely treatment."

Andrew D'Cunha, welcomed the dignitaries and the gathering. Oliver Mendonca thanked the guests, donors and well-wishers. Titus Noronha compered the event.

Anybody doing charity work to be appreciated, However the increase number of old age homes is a sign of our moral decline.Even well to do family elders are landing in these old age homes is quite worrisome.Religious leaders should focus more on these aspects in their religious teaching to educate the youngsters.

Dear Prakash. This elderly home belongs to Louis Mendonca Memorial Trust. My good friend Oliver Mendonca is managing it with his dedicated service. I am just a well wisher and supporting him in his noble work.
