Mangaluru, Mar 31: A release from the office of the police commissioner here said that as a precautionary measure in the interests of holding free and fair Lok Sabha poll, orders have been issued for the externment of 17 persons.

1,533 cases have been registered under the Police Act. Information about people involved with criminal cases and illegal activities were collected and orders of externment have been issued as above, the office said.

Checking of vehicles is already being conducted through 21 check posts set up for the purpose. So far, an amount of Rs 13,79,000 has been impounded. A central reserve police force contingent has already arrived in the city and march past was conducted in 29 sensitive areas. Non-bailable warrants have been issued in respect of 2,996 persons, the release said.

"Out of 2011 fire arms within the limits of the commissionerate, 1,952 have been deposited. Exemption has been given in respect of the remaining weapons. All the police personnel and other staff have been given election-related training," the release further said.
