Bagalkot: Debt burden - farmer immolates self inside his burning sugarcane field

Bagalkot, Apr 1: In a heart-wrenching incident reported from Chikkalagundi village of Beelagi taluk in the district, a farmer torched the sugarcane crop grown by him in his field. He then entered the burning field and gave away his life. This suicide happened on Sunday March 31.

Hanamantha Rangappa Janmatti (62) ended his life in this fashion. It is said that he had borrowed over Rs 5.50 lac from nationalised bank, primary agricultural credit cooperative bank and other banks. A report about this suicide stands registered in Beelagi police station. The deceased farmer is survived by wife, two sons, and a daughter.

Tahsildar, Amaresh Biradar, visited the spot and consoled the grieving family members of the farmer.
