Mangaluru: Kulur old bridge set to be closed for traffic shortly?

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Apr 1: Sources say that the old bridge at Kulur that has been serving the people since the last 67 years will be closed shortly. The officials are said to be waiting for election process to be completed before it is closed for heavy vehicles.

National Highways Authority of India, which had earlier found that this bridge, which was inaugurated on September 21, 1952, was unfit for movement of heavy vehicles, had written to the deputy commissioner of the district to stop using this bridge. The authority has now sent a reminder to the district administration again in this regard.

Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner, Sasikanth Senthil, says that closure of this bridge will result in increase in the traffic density on the other available bridge. Therefore, the district administration plans to maintain status quo till the process of entrusting contract of a new parallel bridge is completed.

Under instructions from the ministry of surface transport, a Hyderabad-based concern, R V Associates, had checked the condition of the old bridge at Kulur and certified that it was unfit for use by vehicles. A team of experts who were entrusted wth the task of conducting a survey of the proposed circular road under 'Bharatmala' project, had also reported that the said bridge was not fit for use.

The government has already given its nod for the construction of a new bridge between the two previous bridges to replace the old bridge at a cost of Rs 65 crore.

A committee headed by the assistant commissioner here had opined that bullet tankers having more than 16 wheels moving between Udupi and Bengaluru and from Bengaluru towards MRPL can move via Padubidri - Karkala - Guruvayanakere, Dharmasthala, Kokkada and Periashanti. Heavy vehicles coming from Kerala can move to Kavoor via KPT, Bajpe, Kana and Suratkal. Heavy vehicles like trucks and buses having less than 16 wheels can move on the existing new bridge at Kulur. Light vehicles like cars, jeeps, tempos, two-wheelers etc can continue to move on the old bridge both ways.

First of all there was no need to construct flyover at Kulur. Instead the money should have been utilized for constructing new bridge, which is of more importance.

Kulur old bridge inaugurated on September 21, 1952, is one of the unique in style and landmark for Mangalore city.
From PM Modi to BJP is habitually blaming that previous government in 70 years not done anything to this nation. But this bridge serving the nation for 67 years proves that quality of the construction is far better than under construction Varanasi flyover collapse in the high-profile Lok Sabha constituency represented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi that killed 15 people before the inauguration.
The Delhi-Meerut expressway, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May, is already showing cracks with the first spell of pre-monsoon showers. According to a report in ABP, an entire portion of the road has caved in.
Although the entire stretch is yet to be functional, the Delhi-Meerut Expressway has been making headlines after PM Modi inaugurated a 9km stretch of this in an extravagant roadshow on May 27. It became a major talking point for the Opposition because nearly 90% of the 82-km project is yet to be made operational.
Similarly, 302-km long Agra-Lucknow expressway caves in, which costs nearly Rs 15,000 crore, was completed in record time of 23 months. SUV plunges over 15 feet after road collapse.

Cracks force the closure of recently inaugurated Rs 200-cr flyover in Gurugram in Haryana under BJP rule.
The city Mangalore already listed under 'Smart city' under BJP ruling for 25 long years since 1991. The city MP Nalin Kumar says Rs14,000 crores in his tenure. But this is the pathetic situation of Kulur bridge were is all the development is gone?
Record on meeting infrastructure targets will prove crucial ahead of 2019, but what about putting the common man's life at risk?
Perhaps India is the only nation value of a human is least bothered. The tragedy become instant talks until some new topic erases the bad memories. Suffering continues without any corrective actions.

I am sure, the district administration will use those 69 Crores to build yet another 2 lane bridge.
Kindly think through and build a 8 lane bridge. Use a simple math and calculate the rate of increase in number of vehicles every year and build a bridge with capacity to cater next 3 generations at the very least.

Construction of new bridge could have started already. There was no need to wait until the existing bridge became non-usable and traffic grew so much that it will become a pain now.

Before Congress there were 'Yetthina-Bandi' which did not even needed a bridge.

Be thankful for the bridge that was there till now. And the schools, hospitals, dams, airports, railway - all was still there before 2014.

You surely may have finished your studies before 2014 - what ? Thank you, or no ???
