Udupi, Apr 2: District SP Nisha James launched the first women police patrol vehicle of the district ‘Rani Abbakka’ on the occasion of Police Flag Day at Chandu Maidan, police parade ground, on Tuesday, April 2.

Retired sub-inspector Gopala Krishna was the chief guest and received the guard of honour at the parade. He ceremoniously released the police flag.

Addressing the gathering, retired SI Gopala Krishna said, “Police service is greater service than anything else. I served in the police department due to the good deeds of my parents. Police personnel should be working within the limitations of law and order and must be able to work on the basis of human values. Armed forces will safeguard our border while the police maintains the internal security of the nation. Public cooperation is important to maintain peace and law and order.”

He further said, “Though we retired, we are committed to join duty whenever required.”

He urged the SP to increase the amount of medical grants for police personnel.

SP Nisha James said that she sent a proposal to the department head to sanction Rs 25 lac for police welfare fund. A scholarship of Rs 17,500 has also been distributed among the staff’s children. “Let us do our duty with dedication in order to create a healthy society. For that public support is also important,” she said.

Speaking on ‘Rani Abbakka’ patrol vehicle, she said, “From today itself it will start functioning. There will be one woman sub-inspector, two police constables (male and female) and a driver. At present, it will function during the day time under town station limits at the bus stand, railway station and other places also. For now, there is only one vehicle due to shortage of vehicles. Based on requirement, we will send proposal to the government. Public can complain to the women police station or control room. Police will visit and file case on the spot if necessary.”

About Rs 3,13,714 from the welfare fund was distributed to four persons symbolically on the occasion, out of 70 retired police beneficiaries.

SP Nisha James delivered the keynote address and extended welcome. ASP Kumarachandra rendered the vote of thanks.

B Manamohana Rao, PSI, police control room, CSP compered the programme.
