Mangalore, Mar 26: Biblical play ‘Somia Tum Khoin Vhetai?’, based on the life of St Peter will be staged at the open-air theatre at St Joseph the Worker Church, Neermarga, at 6.30 pm on Sunday March 29.

Neermarga parish priest Fr Charles Menezes and parishioners are organizing this rare Biblical play on their parish premises.

Dolla Manglur, noted director of several Biblical plays, and Claude Bendore will be the co-directors this play. Sangeet Guru Joel Pereira Bejai will be the music director and Fr Rony Serrao is the playwright of this biblical play which will feature 178 artistes on 12 mega stages.

The Biblical play will depict the sufferings of Jesus on the cross, resurrection and ascension into heaven, descending of the Holy Spirit on disciples, persecution of Christians, feeding Christians to hungry lions in enclosures, enduring Christian faith fighting with lions, and the burning of Rome.

St Peter has set an example of his life to all of us.  He had exhibited his humbleness in admitting to Jesus that he was a sinner and not worthy of coming closer to him.

I think it is aimed only for the Konkani Catholics. It would have been a great masterpiece if it was bilingual or trilingual i.e. also in Tulu and Kannada for a wider audience. It seems the play is the konkani version of Quo Vadis Domine (Where are you going Lord?.

It is high time that we think practcing bible than merely acting it. Theatre of any kind should communicate to people about the relevance of the play to the present time. There were many plays based on the Bible presented to catholics who know its sequence any way. In order for such plays to be relevent today they should be presented in contemporary way making people to think and raise questions.

But these dramas at best attempt to bye-heart already known answers again and again. It is same like those sermons that we are used to listening everytime which keep repeating at regular intervals.Let new things come to Konkani theatre keeping in tune with times otherwise it will be the same old wine in new bottle.
