Militants Sneak into J&K Again - One Killed in Encounter

Srinagar, Mar 27: A militant belonging to a group of infiltrators from across the border was killed in the Gurez sector of Baramulla district in an encounter with the Army which has started a combing operation in the area, a defence spokesman said on Friday.

The deceased intruder, part of a group of 10 to 15 militants trying to sneak into Kashmir valley through Gurez, was killed on Thursday night, the spokesman said.

The operation is still on, he added. Gurez is one of the traditional routes that militants had been using in early spring to infiltrate into the valley.

The Army scuttled a major infiltration bid when it killed 17 militants in a five-day-long operation in three different areas of Shamsbari range between March 20 and March 25 in Kupwara.

Eight soldiers including a Major were also killed in the prolonged encounter during which a large quantity of arms and ammunition were seized.
