Doha: Team Kreston SVP, CAs lifts men’s DCICAI, Parex Group lifts women’s cricket trophy

Doha, Apr 30: The Doha Chapter (The “Chapter”) of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) is one of the most active organization in Qatar. It regularly conducts professional events for over 300 members in Qatar. It also regularly conducts lots of sporting events. The Chapter recently concluded its 23rd Cricket Tournament for its members. 9 teams including 2 ladies team participated in the tournament for the first time. As many as 135 players displayed their cricketing skills in the tournament that was spread for 3 weeks. The unveiling of trophies and jerseys was done in a grand style. The players wore those colorful jerseys displaying the names of their respective teams along with their own names and that gave a unique flavor to the tournament. Preliminary matches were followed by semi-final matches. The Finals were held on 19th April 2019 which was witnessed by more than 300 members and their families.

On the final day, the evening started with a Ladies cricket match between Team Gulf Incon, captained by CA Neethu Jith and Team Parex Group, captained by Usha Ravishankar. Batting first, Team Parex, put up an indomitable score of 121 in their allotted 15 overs and won by the margin of 41 runs. Both the teams Gulf Incon and Parex Group performed brilliantly in the field while batting, bowling and fielding and displayed a good sport. Apexa was awarded the player of the Match for her all-round contribution.



The second match of the evening was the final between Team Aster Hospital & Medical Centre, captained by CA Arun Somnath and team Kreston SVP, Chartered Accountants captained by CA Sheji Valiyakath. The men’s final cricket match was a culmination of 3 weeks of intense cricket matches played between 7 teams to decide the 2 finalists. Team Kreston SVP, Chartered Accountants put up a formidable score of 171 in their allotted 20 overs and won by a close margin of 6 runs. Again, a good show of bowling and batting performance by both the teams. CA Arun Somnath was awarded the man of the match and the man of the series for his splendid all-round performance.

Khalid Fakhroo, head of Facilities, Messaieed Industrial City was the chief guest for the final matches. Being an avid sports fan himself, Fakhroo was enthralled by the passionate performance and participation of the members. He was very appreciative of women playing and performing in cricket and congratulated the organization for holding such tournament. Fakhroo gladly handed over the glittering trophies to the winners and runners up team in both the categories. He also handed the medals to the players of both the teams and acknowledged the volunteers. CA Gopal Balasubramaniam was felicitated for being the only member featuring in and playing for all 23 cricket tournaments organized by the chapter. The master of ceremony for the event was CA MI Farid.

Chairperson CA Rukkaiya Pachisa closed the gala event by congratulating the winners thanking the chief guest and the members for their whole-hearted participation and appreciated the efforts put in the by organizing committee and volunteers for making this Annual Flagship event a grand success. She also mentioned that apart from being good at numbers, the members of the ICAI Doha Chapter are equally good in the field of sports which is a strong indication of keeping themselves fit and healthy. Post the prize distribution ceremony the members enjoyed the raffle show managed by Vice Chairperson, CA Sandeep Chowdhary and the Secretary CA Nirlep Bhatt who entertained the crowd with gifts and prizes.

The Doha chapter of ICAI is established in the year 1981 and is the oldest among the 33 overseas chapters of the Institute of Chartered Accountant of India. The current membership of the chapter is approximately 300, who hold key positions in private and public sector establishments in Qatar and are actively involved in support and development of accounting profession in Qatar. The chapter is actively involved in enhancing and updating the professional knowledge of its members, local professionals and non-members. Doha chapter of ICAI is the first professional membership body to be registered with Qatar Financial Centre.
