Moodbidri: Gantalkatte Accident - No SSLC Students among 64 Injured

Moodbidri, Apr 2: As reported earlier one person died while 64 others were injured when a private bus hit against a roadside minor bridge at Urpelpade near Gantalkatte here on Thursday April 2 morning. As of now 6 persons with major injuries have been admitted to hospital.
However, locals heaved a sigh of relief after it was confirmed that there was no SSLC student in the bus. On other regular days many SSLC students of a local school used to travel in the same bus. However, since the exams were on, most of those students chose to travel in another bus reaches Moodbidri before 'Kooshmandini' bus.
The deceased has been identified as Dharnappa Poojary (37). Sources from Alva's hospital here confirmed that a total of 64 persons were treated in the hospital. Out of them two each were students of Alva's engineering and PU College while two more were staff of Alva's institutions.
Six persons who are admitted for further treatment have been identified as Santhosh Nithade (36), Sundar Kayyaru (37), Ramesh (65), Gopal Berinje (34), Raghavendra Maroor (40) and Chaitra Maroo (20).
Though it has been said that bus hit the minor bride after the main plate of the bus disintegrated, one of the passengers speaking to Daijiworld correspondent said that bus was playing at a high speed and the driver was busy talking with some passengers seated in the front seat.
But some were of the opinion that sub-contract system followed by private buses is resulting in tragedies. Since the conductor or driver working for the buses are working on sub-contract they usually do not go to the owner of the bus, if there are major repairs to be done to the vehicle. Even if they approach, the owners usually turn a deaf ear. It could be noted that the bus which plunged into a gorge near Iruvail a couple of days ago too was on sub-contract. The steering of the bus had some problems and need repairs. But the driver had continued running the bus with the steering problems for six days before it met with the accident.

Moodbidri, Apr 2: A private bus bearing the name 'Kooshmandini' which was moving towards Moodbidri from Beltangady, met with an accident at Guntalkatte Urpel Pade near here at around 8 am on Thursday April 2. One of the passengers died in the accident on the spot, while over 30 were injured, three of them seriously.
The bus hit a minor bridge before tumbling over. Reportedly, the main plate of the bus suffered a cut, causing the accident. The bus was loaded with workers proceeding for their jobs, students many of whom were to appear for SSLC examination etc. People were also standing on the foot boards when the accident occurred. About thirty people were injured in the accident. Several of them were treated in hospitals here, while serious cases requiring advanced treatment have been referred to hospitals in the city.
