Mangalore, Apr 11: A sudden fire owing to short circuit gutted valuables in Milagres church near here on Saturday April 11.

Though many details are not available as of now, police sources said that fire was owing to short circuit. The incident came to light on Saturday morning. Several fans and other things were gutted in the tragedy.

Fr Walter D'Mello, the Parish Priest has filed a complaint with the Pandeshwar police station in this regard.

The church was closed after the Good Friday observance on April 10 night. Some sources said that Repository Altar (place where Blessed Sacrament is kept for adoration after the Maundy Thursday celebration till the Easter) caught the fire first which later spread to other parts of the main church.

Mangalore churches have precious artefacts which need to to be preserved. To prevent such mishaps in the future, there is a need to install advanced fire alarm/security systems. There is also a need to document the heritage of Mangalore churches(video documentary, coffee table book etc), I urge Walter Nandalike to take up this task.

It is a matter of great regret that  the Altar of Repose at Milagris Church should have caught fire and destroyed the beauty of this wonderful place. Milagris Church has a great tradition and indeed it is an ancient Church where many of our forefathers have attended services. I have a particular love for this Church in my heart. This is the place where I was baptized, confirmed and where Irene and I got married. We even celebrated our Golden wedding at the foot of the Altar of Our Lady of Miracles. It is my sincere hope that many of us will go forward and restore the altar to its original Glory

It appears like the destruction is due to lightning. Milagres church is magnificent dedicated to Our Lady of Miracles. I too have prayed there initially and now fear entering it due to recent happenings and close my hands in that direction bowing my head. Our Lady is kind and the devotion with which She looks has surprised me ever since.

It is sad and unfortunate that such an unfortunate incident should happen and that too at the end of the lenten season. The church authorities should conduct a thorough investigation to get to root cause of this fire. Prima facie how can any one just say that the cause of the fire was due to an `electrical short circuit.Milagres Church is a beautiful church and I am sure its beauty will be restored at the earliest.

My heart goes out to the dear parishers of Milgres Church, which is very dear to our heart as it is dedicated to our Mother Mary. Whatever the reason for this fire, I would request all the catholics around the world to come forward in rebuilding it. Only we may not be able to bring the ageold glory of this Church, which was one of the attractions of Mangalore and a place of prayer for all visiting catholics in and around Mangalore. May God Give strength to the Parish priest and his team and especially the Milagres parisheners to take courage and start anew.
