Mangalore, Apr 22: The weather turned gloomy in the city as six members of the Serrao family, who died in a tragic car accident near Hubli, were taken on their final journey on Wednesday April 22.

The somber scene of the coffins accompanied by thousands of mourners from around Mangalore, Udupi, and other places left an indelible impression on those present.

Michael Francis Serrao (50), his wife Anita Serrao (45), children Sweety Serrao (12) and Shawn Serrao (2), and Michael’s brothers Thomas Serrao (38) and Clifton Serrao (32), were killed on Tuesday April 21, after the Santro car in which they were traveling was hit by an ore-laden truck, killing all six on the spot.

As the coffins were taken from the Serrao residence near Kana around 3.00 pm, everyone present there was grief-stricken with not a single dry eye. It was indeed poignant to see the mortal remains of Shawn and Sweety kept in a single coffin.

Bishop of Mangalore Aloysius Paul D’Souza led the prayers for the departed souls and offered the funeral mass with parish priest Antony and several other priests from various parishes.

Michael’s parents Rita and Francis Serrao who participated in the funeral, were totally shattered and understandably, nothing could comfort them though the Bishop, priests, and the huge crowd tried to console them by offering condolences individually.

Let it not happen to any one.I would stongly support the views of Wilson Lewis, Mangalore. No parents would like to see their children''s dead bodies when they are still alive. When I met with a fatal accident in 2000 I prayed " God keep me alive till my mother lives." Dear aunt Rita and uncle Francis, HEARTFELT CONDOLENCES TO ALL OF YOU. First of all, heartfelt condolences to members of the bereaved family. May God bless them with enough strength to meet this incident/accident. On the second point which many of the readers have pointed out - punishing the unruly drivers. As you know, some of the money that is available today is EASY MONEY either due to nature of work or parental legacy. Hence, new generation does not value that money and hence blow it.

As for other drivers, many of them are illiterates and there are no skill additions over the years. Hence, to meet deadlines we cut corners and cut short someone''s life also. This is a social responsibility to be taken by both the RTO authorities and the employers. Until then, we will have many more innocent souls sacrificed for no fault of theirs. AMEN.

My sincere advice to all Mangaloreans please do not put yourself and your dear ones to needless risk by travelling long distances in your small personal vehicles. Spend a little more and travel safely by train, buses or if you can afford take a flight. Young brothers and sisters of Mangalore please visit their parents and give them your love and assurance, forward them your support as their real children would have. Let them feel that inspite of their great loss, God has blessed them this day with thousands of children from all around Mangalore and the country.

When someone we love passes away, We ache, but we go on Our dear departed would want us to heal, After they are gone.Grief is a normal way to mend. The anguish and pain in our hearts We need time to remember and time to mourn,Before the recovery starts. Let''s draw together to recuperate, As we go throught this period of sorrow Let''s help each other, with tender care.To find a brighter tomorrow.
